Superman

Target and tighten that lower back!

People generally misunderstand how to target the core. They usually think of the core in terms of "Abs". But the truth is that our core involves the front, sides and back.

The Superman exercise is a great, low impact exercise that most people can do with little, to no trouble. It not only targets your lower back and butt, but also your obliques and abs.

In order to execute the move properly, you'll want to engage your core and  squeeze your butt before you begin. Pace and tempo are critical in order to get the best results possible.

Because the move is relatively easy, you'll want to be sure to pause at the top of the movement to ensure that you engage the muscles properly.

When the exercise is done properly,  you may also feel muscles in your upper back and hamstrings get activated because of the position you'll be holding at the top of the movement. Don’t be alarmed if you feel your the entire rear of your body light up with fatigue.

The big takeaway is to keep in kind that you want to be sure to use multiple exercises to effectively target your core. That will also ensure that you won't develop any muscular imbalances and will have a healthy core.

1.   Lay on your stomach on the floor with your arms and legs stretched out and spaced apart with your eyes straight down facing the floor. This is your starting position.

2.   Before you begin inhale through your nose, engage your core

3.   Begin the movement by squeezing you butt, now raise your head, arms and legs off the floor at the same time.

4.   Hold the position for 1 count and slowly return to the starting position

Tip 1: Be sure to keep your core engaged throughout the exercise

Tip 2: In order to keep your spine aligned, look up when your arms and legs are up and look down when your arms and legs are down.
